Experiencing A Workshop At Lush

26th August 2024 - New Experience Number 20.

Having never made a bath bomb or a face mask before, I bought the last available ticket to experience a workshop at Lush, the high street cosmetic store.

This would be a pampering make to add to my list of new activities tried in 2024.

One of the things I love about trying new things, is that it gives me the opportunity to tap into my child-like curiosity for the world. This particular new thing definitely gave me the chance to do just that!

Lush The Shop

You usually smell Lush before you see it. The intoxicatingly intense blend of natural fragrances seep out of the shop door.

Stepping inside you’re greeted by an abundance of brightly coloured cosmetics and fresh handmade beauty treats. Whatever your bathing style or your routine to get clean, you’ll find it in store.

Founded in 1995, Lush have been making ethical and innovative products while striving to do good in the world.

They also have many puns for the names of their products, something I am a big fan of. Jason and the argan oil, and Honey I washed the kids are two of my current favourites!

I’d spotted the workshop on eventbrite and having never made either a bath bomb or a face mask, I booked my place. The instructions suggested wearing something that we didn’t mind getting glitter on. It also mentioned that if an adult was accompanying a child to supervise them, they didn’t need to buy a ticket.

Being A Big Kid

The workshop was on the shop floor, which I was quite surprised at because it’s not the biggest space. However, it just added to the fun atmosphere!

I was a little early so introduced myself to the teacher, and asked if she knew if any other adults would be on the session. Since reading the instructions, something was niggling at me that I might not be the target audience for the activity.

Sure enough, as the other participants arrived, it became apparent that I was the oldest person taking part.

The next oldest attendee was about 13! There were plenty of other adults there, but they were all keeping an eye on their children.

Despite not having a grown up to keep an eye on me, I had a great time!

It was certainly a contrast from an experience a few weeks earlier when I’d tried lawn bowling and been the youngest person there.

Experiencing A Workshop At Lush

To begin, we all introduced ourselves by playing a game of hot potato, but passing around a shower jelly rather than a spud. As well as saying our name, we had to tell the group what our favourite colour, or favourite food was. I mean, it’s just like an ice breaker isn’t it? There’s no reason that was exclusively for kids.

Managing not to make too much mess!

Our awesome teacher made sure that we all got involved with mixing and sprinkling and swooshing to make our beautifully bright bath bombs.

There was an element of speed and a dash of competition. If our gloved hands weren’t in the bowl mingling up the ingredients, they had to be above our heads – something which I think could work well in other workshops!

For our second make we worked as a team smashing the avocado then gently stirring in all of the ingredients to make the lush smooth and creamy face mask.

Everyone got hands on, took a turn and contributed. Whilst there was a bit of glitter on most of us by the end, it was only really the table that got messy.

What I Thought Of The Lush Workshop

It was really fun and I enjoyed being one of the kids for an hour.

It was a little bit chaotic and that just added to the fun. Our fabulous teacher kept everything moving along and it was all go!

Lush are very much about doing good and making a difference, and they have values that really resonate with. You can find out more about them at wearelush.com

One of the brilliant things aside from making the products, was finding out a bit about the behind the scenes of Lush. The way we were making the bath bomb and face mask, is exactly how they are made in the factory. Except the professionals are much quicker than us – we only made two products in 45 minutes, I don’t think we’d last very long!

I had a great time, despite being the only adult!

The smell and colour of the natural ingredients was incredible and I got to take away my wonderful creations so I can pamper myself on a lush-ious night in at home!

While some grown ups may consider this to be a little bit daft, I embraced the fun and had a fantastic time!
